Oppidum d’Ensérunes is an ancient hill town located near the village of Nissan-lez-Ensérune, half way between Béziers and Narbonne. The village was occupied without interruption between Bronze age and Ancient Roman times. It offers a good view on the coastal plain, and lies close to the ancient Roman Via Domitia road, linking Ancient Rome and Spain. The Montady lake, a huge swamp that has been transformed for farming purposes lies below the Oppidum, and displays an impressive circular shape. The Canal du Midi is also located right beneath the hill the ancient village lies on.
The site also hosts a museum which traces back the site’s history, and exhibits a large collection of Gallic ceramics and weapons.
