The Cathar Castles were built due to religious conflicts that broke out in 1140 and affected the entire region and more specifically the surroundings of Toulouse, Carcassonne, Beziers and Albi.
The Cathar Castles are representative of the Cathar epic. The Castles of Peyrepertuse (the mineral ship), Aguilar, Termes, Puilaurens, Quéribus (the very last fortification to have laid down its arms ) and Puivert are amongst the most significant.
The remaining structures of these massive and airy castles that seem to be clinging or hanging from cliffs up to 700m above sea level, contrast with their powerful looking fortifications.
The Cathar Route will enable you to discover the History of these « bons hommes » as well as numerous and varied Castles, from Durban all the way to Lagrasse.
The Cathar route is very easy to reach from Campsite La Yole, which will allow you to admire the remains of the Cathar civilisation.
